The economy and the market
Earnings season
Definition
The weeks after each calendar quarter ends, when most companies publish their quarterly results.
Example
Take the quarter that ends on March 31. Over roughly the next six weeks, most companies, company XYZ among them, publish their January-to-March results, and the busiest weeks bring several hundred reports. If XYZ reports in late April, the implied volatility of its options might sit at 45% the day before and drop to 30% the day after, once the numbers are out.
Hypothetical numbers, for illustration only.
