Bull market
Definition
A sustained rise in prices. By common convention, it starts once a broad index has risen 20% from its low.
Example
Say a broad index bottoms at 3,000 and climbs to 3,600. That 20% gain meets the common threshold, and the bull market is then usually dated from the 3,000 low, not from the day 3,600 was reached. Dips of 5% or 10% along the way do not end it unless the index falls 20% from a high.
Hypothetical numbers, for illustration only.
