Checking the market clock…
How to use the market clock
- Check the status line: open, closed, pre-market or after-hours, with a countdown to the next change.
- Pick a city from the list to convert the times, or “My time zone” to use your device’s clock.
- Read the sessions for today, or for the next trading day when the market is closed: pre-market from 4:00 a.m., regular hours from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and after-hours until 8:00 p.m., New York time.
- Holidays and early closes are built in, so the clock skips them on its own.
How the clock works
Regular trading on the NYSE and Nasdaq runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday to Friday, except on market holidays. The clock reads the current New York time, applies the exchange calendar and converts the session times to the city you choose, including the daylight saving changes on both sides.
Pre-market and after-hours trading are set by brokers, not by the exchanges, so your broker’s extended hours may be shorter than the 4:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. window shown here.
Pre-market: 4:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. ET
Regular session: 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET
After-hours: 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET
Early close: 1:00 p.m. ET on a few days a year, with after-hours until 5:00 p.m.
Example: the opening bell around the world
The 9:30 a.m. New York open falls at different local times, and the gap moves when clocks change:
- London: 2:30 p.m. most of the year, but 1:30 p.m. for a few weeks in March and around late October, when the US and the UK change clocks on different dates.
- Riyadh, which has no daylight saving: 4:30 p.m. during US summer time and 5:30 p.m. during US winter time.
- Dubai: 5:30 p.m. during US summer time and 6:30 p.m. in US winter time.
Questions
What time does the US stock market open?
At 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time, Monday to Friday, and it closes at 4:00 p.m. ET. Pre-market trading can start as early as 4:00 a.m. and after-hours trading runs until 8:00 p.m., depending on your broker.
Is the stock market open on holidays?
No. The NYSE and Nasdaq close on market holidays such as New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and close early, at 1:00 p.m. ET, on a few days around them. The clock includes the official calendar.
Why does the opening time change in my country?
Because the US moves its clocks on different dates from many countries, and some countries do not change their clocks at all. The clock handles it automatically. The US stock market hours lesson has the full table.
