Stock market basics
Shares outstanding
Definition
All the shares a company has issued and not repurchased, including those held by insiders. Found in quarterly and annual reports.
Example
Say a company has 100 million shares outstanding and earns $50 million, or $0.50 per share. If it buys back 5 million shares, 95 million remain, and the same profit works out to about $0.53 per share. If it issued 10 million new shares instead, the count would rise to 110 million and the profit would be spread over more shares.
Hypothetical numbers, for illustration only.
