The economy and the market

Market breadth

Definition

How many stocks take part in a market move, measured by counts such as advancers vs decliners or the share of stocks above a moving average.

Example

Say an index of 500 stocks rises 3% in a month. If 400 of its members (80%) end the month above their 200-day moving average, the gain is broad; if only 150 (30%) do, a few heavyweights are carrying the index while most stocks lag. The headline gain is the same in both cases, which is why breadth is read alongside price, not instead of it.

Hypothetical numbers, for illustration only.
