Trading the US market
Short interest
Definition
The total number of a stock’s shares that have been sold short and not yet bought back, as reported on a set settlement date.
Example
Say a stock has a float of 40 million shares and a short interest of 8 million shares as of the latest settlement date. That means 20% of the float has been sold short and not yet bought back. Because the figure is published days after that date, short sellers may have bought back shares or added to their positions since then.
Hypothetical numbers, for illustration only.
