Day trading
Definition
Day trading means opening and closing every position within the same session, so you hold nothing overnight. Most day traders work on 1-minute to 1-hour charts during the regular session. Our guide to day trading for beginners covers a full daily routine.
Example
Say you buy 300 shares at $25.10 at 10:15 a.m. and sell them at $25.40 at 2:30 p.m. That is a $90 gain before costs, and because nothing is held past the 4:00 p.m. close, an earnings surprise that evening cannot touch the trade. Make 10 trades a day, though, and commissions and spreads add up quickly, whether the trades win or lose.
Hypothetical numbers, for illustration only.
