In an uptrend, retracements are measured down from the high and extensions are projected above it; in a downtrend it is the mirror image. The levels are areas to watch, not signals.

How to use the Fibonacci calculator

  1. Pick a clear swing on your chart: the low and the high of the last impulse move, using wicks or closes consistently.
  2. Enter the swing high and the swing low, then choose the direction: uptrend if price rose from the low to the high, downtrend if it fell from the high to the low.
  3. Read the retracement levels, where a pullback might pause. 38.2%, 50% and 61.8% are the most watched.
  4. Read the extensions: possible targets beyond the swing if the trend resumes.
  5. Look for confluence. A level that lines up with support or resistance, a moving average or a harmonic pattern carries more weight than a level on its own.

The Fibonacci formulas in plain words

Every level is a share of the swing’s range, the distance from the high to the low. In an uptrend, retracements are measured down from the high and extensions up from the low, so 100% is the high itself and 161.8% sits 61.8% of the range above it. In a downtrend it is the mirror image.

50% is not a Fibonacci ratio, but it is included because traders watch it. TradingView’s Trend-based fib extension tool projects from a third point, the end of the pullback, so its extension lines land in different places from these.

Range = swing high − swing low

Uptrend: retracement = high − range × level; extension = low + range × level

Downtrend: retracement = low + range × level; extension = high − range × level

Worked example

A stock rallies from a swing low of $100.00 to a swing high of $110.00, a range of $10.00, in an uptrend.

  • 23.6% retracement: $110.00 − $10.00 × 0.236 = $107.64.
  • 38.2%: $106.18. 50%: $105.00. 61.8%: $103.82. 78.6%: $102.14.
  • 127.2% extension: $100.00 + $10.00 × 1.272 = $112.72.
  • 161.8%: $116.18. 261.8%: $126.18.
  • A pullback that holds near $103.82 with a bullish candle is a setup to watch, with a stop under the 78.6% level or the swing low. On its own, the level is not a buy signal.

Questions

Which Fibonacci levels matter most?

38.2%, 50% and 61.8% are the most watched retracements, and 61.8% is often called the golden ratio. 23.6% marks a shallow pullback in a strong trend, and 78.6% a deep one that comes close to cancelling the move. For targets, traders mostly use 127.2% and 161.8%.

Should I use wicks or closing prices?

Either works if you are consistent. Wicks capture the true extremes; closes ignore brief spikes. Pick one rule and apply it to every swing you measure.

Do Fibonacci levels work?

They are areas many traders watch, not forces that move price, and there is little solid evidence that price respects these ratios more than other levels. Use them to plan entries, stops and targets, and wait for price action to confirm. The Fibonacci retracement lesson covers how to trade them.

What is the difference between a retracement and an extension?

A retracement measures a pullback inside the swing, between 0% and 100% of it. An extension projects beyond the swing, past 100%, to estimate where the move might reach if the trend continues.
